Unleashed Wonder Grants Call for Submissions

Unleashed Wonder logo
Do you have a creative project in mind that calls for a little more time or funds than you currently have? Would some support from the Center for Creativity help you unleash your sense of wonder (and ours!) and realize that project?

The Center for Creativity is calling for proposals from undergraduate students in any of the University of Pittsburgh’s schools or majors for creative works undertaken this summer. Awardees should be prepared to exhibit their work at the University’s Undergraduate Reseach and Creative Expression Fair in Fall 2024.

Applications are due March 8, 2024.

Who: Pitt undergrads in any School or major
What: Up to $5000 for a creative project inspired by and/or communicating a sense of wonder
When: Work must be done in Summer 2024; completed work will be shared at the Fall 2024 Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression Fair (specific date TBD)

Key Dates

  • Call announced: February 8, 2024
  • Information meeting for those interested: February 23, 2024
  • Applications due: March 8, 2024
  • Notification: March 18, 2024

Requirements: Projects may be independent or team-based, but they must be conceived by a Pitt undergraduate student and engage individuals or resources outside the student’s primary University affiliation/major.

Students may engage University staff, faculty, or graduate and professional students as resource partners, but a staff or faculty employee should be identified as a primary mentor. Applications will not be considered complete until the mentor submits the form confirming their understanding of the proposed project and their role.

Note: Projects with an interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary approach that make effective use of C4C resources will receive priority consideration.

Your application should include:

  • A brief overview (250 words max) of what you want to do and why. How does working on this piece allow you to "unleash wonder" or encourage others to unleash wonder?
  • A project plan: What steps are involved in completing the project? What deadlines are you setting for yourself?
  • A proposed budget: How much do you estimate will be needed for materials, equipment, or other resources? How will you value your time? (Some of the grant can be used for a small stipend to support the work in the summer.)
  • A short bio (roughly 100 words) of yourself that addresses your creative life.
  • A brief identification of your resource partner/mentor and what makes them a good fit for your work. Note that you are encouraged to engage with someone outside of your academic discipline, and that you must identify a staff person or faculty member who has agreed to serve as your mentor for this project and who has acknowledged that agreement through the Unleashed Wonder Grant Mentor Agreement.
  • A brief description of how you imagine using (or not) the resources available through the Center for Creativity.
  • A short narrative or artist statement (250 words max). Imagine that the work is finished: What will you say about its genesis, its inspiration, and its materials or media?
